In this introduction to the preconference, the speakers will discuss MS-DRGs, complications and comorbidities, and the Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS). They will also explain how documentation impacts reimbursement, drives principal diagnosis selection, and affects medical necessity. Additionally, attendees will learn which elements of the health record can be used for code assignment, how to identify documentation that needs clarification for code assignment, and what information can be used as a clinical indicator.

The speakers will discuss the process for updating the Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting as well as the importance of the American Hospital Association’s Coding Clinic quarterly publication. Attendees will be able to accurately select principal and secondary diagnoses, explain the importance of present on admission indicator assignment, and describe how to assign a working DRG.

Attendees will conclude the first day of learning with a thorough discussion of the key CDI communication tool: the physician query. Speakers will discuss the different types of queries, current professional guidance on query writing, what constitutes a compliant query, and how to know when a query is leading. Attendees will walk through case scenarios to determine whether a query is needed and how best to apply industry standards.
